What is a Lay Led Congregation?

In many Unitarian Universalist churches, and specifically at UUFP, a lay-led congregation is one that operates without a full-time ordained minister. Instead, leadership and responsibilities are shared among members of the community. Worship services are planned and often led by lay members, with occasional guest speakers such as visiting UU ministers, community leaders, or educators.

Governance of the entire congregation is handled democratically through elected boards and committees, reflecting the UU commitment to shared responsibility and collective decision-making. Religious education, social justice work, and pastoral care are all carried out by volunteers from our congregation who are deeply committed to the values of Unitarian Universalism.

Lay-led congregations like UUFP exemplify the spirit of shared ministry, fostering a strong sense of ownership, inclusion, diversity, and active participation among all members. This approach is particularly common in smaller UU communities and offer a flexible, empowering approach to spiritual life grounded in the core UU principles of dignity, justice, and a free search for truth.
